His style is best remembered with characters in reflective mood, set against complex, powerful landscapes.

Friedrich is respected by many as a key figure in the German Romantic movement and a painter of international importance and influence. Friedrich was closely linked to famous British artists Constable and Turner and all remain firmly in the forefront of influential artists of that era. The gallery below features all of the best Friedrich paintings to buy as reproductions, simply select the one you want to order.

Friedrich produced a lot of his early work and training in pencil sketches with much of his famous use of atmospheric effects produced from memory. He paid great attention to producing accurate and emotional depictions of light, and of the illumination of sun and moon on clouds and water: optical phenomena peculiar to the Baltic coast that had never before been painted with such an emphasis.

During 1920s Friedrich’s paintings had been discovered by the Expressionists, and then later in the 1930s and early 1940s Surrealists and Existentialists frequently gained inspiration and direction from his own original art style. Friedrich completed the first of his major paintings in 1807, at the age of 34. His style has certainly been loved and respected in equal amounts by many different art movements over recent generations which underlines the quality of his work and the charm that he would create in each of them. The Cross in the Mountains, today known as the Tetschen Altar (Gemäldegalerie, Dresden), is an altarpiece panel commissioned by the Countess of Thun for her family’s chapel in Tetschen, Bohemia. It was to be one of the few commissions the artist received.

Friedrich helped position landscape painting as a major genre within Western art. Friedrich’s style most influenced artists such as Johan Christian Dahl and later the likes of Arnold Böcklin was strongly influenced by his work, and the substantial presence of Friedrich’s works in Russian collections influenced many Russian painters, in particular Arkhip Kuindzhi and Ivan Shishkin. Friedrich’s spirituality anticipated American painters such as Albert Pinkham Ryder, Ralph Blakelock, the painters of the Hudson River School and the New England Luminists.
